JJ Cale was an American treasure that too few knew about, unfortunately. He wrote so many songs made famous by others that it's actually hard to believe.
John Weldon "J. J." Cale(December 5, 1938 – July 26, 2013) was an American guitarist, singer, and songwriter. Though he avoided the limelight,his influence as a musical artist has been widely acknowledged by figures such as Mark Knopfler, Neil Young and Eric Clapton, who described him as "one of the most important artists in the history of rock".He is considered to be one of the originators of the Tulsa Sound, a loose genre drawing on blues, rockabilly, country, and jazz.
In 2008, Cale and Clapton received a Grammy Award for their album The Road to Escondido.
Met JJ in Reno when he was doing a show, opening a new Casino. There was almost nobody there, I’d be surprised if there were more than 20 people watching.that was ‘73 or ‘74. What a down to earth guy. It amazed me the songs he wrote that Clapton, and many others made hits, but almost no one knew they were his songs. RIP bro.

ReplyDeleteJJ Cale was a master songwriter who gave our generation so much, and we gave him so little. I wish I'd bothered to look at the songwriting credits of the songs I love so much that I never knew, until his death were his gift to us. Requiescat in pace. And thank you.
